Review: Figma 118 Mami Tomoe

figma Mami posing
Continuing on the line of Puella Magi figmas is Mami Tomoe, the senpai type member of the group. Personally she was my favorite and her character design is a factor in that. With a design and weapons reminiscent of musketeers of old and an elegant fighting style and personality, Mami certainly gives off a classy feel, which I think is pretty awesome. The figma is no exception, there is a lot to like here.

Mami comes from the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica which I talked a little about in my review of figma Madoka and Homura. Mami saves Madoka and Sayaka in the beginning of the anime and acts as a sort of mentor for them. She is a veteran witch hunter and seems to be pretty strong as a Puella Magi, enough for some of the others like Kyouko and Homura to give her a wide berth. But even with her strong and stoic personality we can see some weaknesses in her.

Mami readying her muskets

Mami comes with lots of display options, although not quite as many as Homura. As you can see she can take off her hat that’s attached to her hairpin (although I think its a really cool hat so I always have it on her). A separate hairpin by itself is included, it’s small though so place it in a safe place! Her corkscrew hair (love those by the way!) is articulated a little, not as much as Madoka’s pigtails but enough to not get in the way.

Mami Shooting Minions
Mami back shooting Minions

As Mami is ruining the tea party we can get a good look at her muskets. They’re a bit shoddy in paintwork as far as figma accessories typically go but it’s not too bad and when you have 6 of them, the rage I normally would have felt is a bit lessened. More pewpew power does that. We also can see her winking face which shows off her confidence well. Also, did I mention that Mami has a huge rack? They’re on par with some of our other endowed figmas like Izumi and Kos-Mos and Mami is shorter to boot! Note: minions are not included with Mami, I made those out of homemade clay and toothpicks.

Mami smash

She can even use them to smash things! I stole this pose from the box actually, hehe. We get a look at another of her accessories, the Dessert Witch Charlotte. She’s actually really well made and very cute. She’s got articulated arms and she comes with her own stand with a peg that is compatible with regular figma stands as well.

Mami downing Charlotte

Poor Charlotte. She even has a certain something’s face on the back of her cape. If only they included that…

Mami sipping tea victory

The one issue with Mami’s poseability is sitting in chairs. Her skirt is pretty short and made of the same flexible plastic as a lot of figma skirts but because of it’s ‘poofiness’, it gets in the way of sitting properly. She’s hovering slightly in this photo because part of the skirt is holding her up. Note: teacup and plate are not included with Mami, I stole those off other figmas.

Mami getting a surprise

Whoops! And if you couldn’t tell by the horrible craftsmanship, that’s homemade too. By the way, love that sketchy look in the Puella Magi figma eyes, just like in the anime.

figma Mami accessories

As you can see, Mami comes with a lot of accessories! Charlotte and her stand, hairpin, hand rack with hands, 2 additional faces, and 6 muskets with their own stands. All this fits in a standard figma box. Good job Max Factory! To accomplish this, they had to tier their packaging, which they’re seeming to do more and more and as a result we are seeing less of the larger figma boxes. A bit of a note, that second face is a bit spoileriffic so I’ve included that picture at the end of the review.

Unlimited Musket Works

All in all, Mami is my favorite Puella Magi figma and seeing the promos for the next two, I think it’s a safe bet she’ll stay that way. Part of it is due to my bias of liking the character and her design. But Charlotte is fun to bash around and she’s got enough muskets to arm her own figma battalion. If you’re a fan of the show, you’re probably already collecting the Figmas, Nendoroids, or scaled figures so this is a no-brainer for you. If you’re not, Mami’s still full of accessories and has a cool design. Thanks for reading!

Mami is quite nice, I think I made the same observations about her that you did. I did not occur to me to compare her with Kos-Mos I did with Mikuru though. I must go back and check now, this is an important topic!

At first I was lukewarm about the idea of the multiple muskets, I thought just two should be fine. Alas, more is better, you can make some really neat things with that many muskets. I’m also quite content with the expressions they included, even though that angsty one only was on screen for a few seconds.

Are those real pastries? I like your set up for these pictures, the homemade Charlotte is pretty cool. You are really making me wanna steal your Madoka props ideas. :)

Yes, they are quite comparable! Although Mami does get to cheat a little because she wears a corset.

I had some ideas as I was finishing the review and I only had time to shoot the Unlimited Musket Works idea before my weekend ended. It would be quite entertaining to hand them out to other figmas actually. And the angsty one is epic enough to become its own meme, just have to think of clever ideas to shoot with it like spilt milk or broken eggs or something.

Yep! I spoiled Zai with some Lindt macaroons and a chocolate hazelnut ganache something-or-other for Easter. Although I had a day to shoot with them before they were gobbled, haha. And thanks! I won’t be doing the reviews for the last 2 girls but I’m trying to throw as many props ideas at Zai as I can.

Not only im liking the reviews, those macaroons are yum :9

I really the fact that max factory went all the way to put all the guns with her, you can make an army now with the other figmas ^^

      Haha, thanks!

Ahh, I know! I wanted to take a pic of that but only thought of it at the last minute. Maybe later…

Macaroons are supposed to be for BRS figures!! Not sure if you’ve seen the BRS anime…

She looks great, so many accessories. I think it’s because her corset is so tight on her body that it makes her boobs look so big. Not complaining!

I’m surprised she managed to keep her head for this review.

The macaroons were part of my Easter treats, I kept pestering to him hurry up and finish shooting so I could eat them.. they were delicious! Totally wish I had of it to use them for a quick BRS shoot before I devoured them though, haha.

NOPE! Zai was watching it and assured me it was crap so I saved some time there xD. Corsets are wonderful things, aren’t they?

I tried to take a headless pic but it’s hard to get Mami’s body and see Charlotte’s face the way that I built her. Tempted to make another Charlotte but with a Pacman profile.

A cake review, are these Macaroons still available at AmiAmi? XD

Mami figma turned out quite nice, I like her more than Homura and Madoka in terms of face expressions.

I could imagine a few people couldn’t buy her because it would have made them sad, to remember that scary and shocking scene. I thought MF would have included the face expression shortly before Mami found her sad destiny. But the one in the last picture of your’s is actually better, the desperate look is very well recreated, it’s nice to see such a convincing face expression on a figma, but I also like the twinking face,♡ awww ♡ this picture showing her salute is so adorable.

The dress looks cool with the corsage and so on. The white color of her guns feels a bit odd to me,maybe a metallic color would have been the better choice for this figma.

Haha, they do have ReMents of macaroons. But the real things are oh, so much tastier. And more expensive T_T

Thanks! Mami has some pretty awesome expressions, not quite cute or creepy terrorist, but I like them. Want to find more uses for mental breakdown face though. I do like it better than the O face in that unforgettable scene, you can get more meme fun out of it. The winking face fits Mami very well and is probably one of my most used faces.

In the scaled figure and anime, she does have white muskets with a bit of silver and black trim and orange gems but since the figma versions are ghetto style, they chose to not do the silver parts of it. Understandable but a bit sad.

Thanks! The background is actually one of Zai’s dresses

So late to the post but first of all I LOVE your pictures.

I wasn’t planning on collecting the Madoka Magica figures, but I’m a Homura Akemi fan so I own that one. She seems lonely so I want to get another *one* of the girls, not five but one. Mami seems my next choice b/c I like her, but Homura is the most petite and Mami is the biggest so I’m not sure they’d even look like they were from the same series. You do a good job of posing these things, do you think visually they’d work as a set? I know Madoka is the best choice to pair with Homura in terms of visual design, but Madoka’s SO poofy and besides I’m waiting for Ultimate Madoka to come out. Any advice is welcome! Again, great site.

      Thanks and welcome!

Max Factory do a really good job of keeping things in proportion within the same series, almost too good in fact because they look a bit off when compared to characters in other series. I just did a quick comparison of our Homura and Mami and they go perfect together. Mami’s figma is just a hair taller than Homura’s; I suppose Homuhomu gets extra lift from her high heeled boots. Also, Homura has lots of guns, Mami has lots of guns, what could go wrong? Thanks again for visiting and let us know how it goes!

      • himari Reply

OMG such a quick reply! Okay that’s great to know. Looking at their boots, Homura’s ankles look so tiny compared to Mami’s that I was worried the scale and detail weren’t quite simpatico. But now I can go for it. I think everyone has a special place in their heart for Mami, even tho she did freak out big time in that alternate timeline. Will be visiting your site again.

What shape “plug” does Mami have behind her face? Is it the upside-down U like most figmas, or the block with a square cut out like Homura and Ultimate Madoka have? I hope my question makes sense – I’m trying to determine compatibility with the other things I have prior to a purchase …

    • Luth Reply

      Hi Akane,
Mami’s face plug is a block with a square cut out. However, it is cut differently from Homura’s and won’t be interchangeable. You can definitely still head swap though!
